NEW LEATHER TOTE

leather.tote.01leather.tote.02

Just finished up a new leather tote for the new collection which will be available mid-June. So much of my new bag production is made possible by finally owning a machine that sets rivets, grommets and other bag hardware called a kick press. A big thank you to my Uncle Ray who scored me a used one and cleaned it up for me – it has made such a huge difference in the production of S&C this season…

And of course who can resist a Bruce Wayne photo bomb? Really, who can resist Bruce Wayne?

MARBLING PROCESS

The ink, as it settles into the water, is so beautiful during the marbling process I couldn’t help but take a few pictures.

DYE TESTS

dyebook.01dyebook.02dyebook.03dyebook.04

One of the things I didn’t think of when moving from Toronto to Vancouver is that the mineral content of the local water is very different. Minerals (among many other variables) drastically change what colours are produced when dyeing fabrics and so all new dye testing must begin…

MARBLE

marbleprototype

I’ve been working on some leather marbling and hand sewing experiments recently – looking to create some phone/sunglass/coin/card case options for S&C. I am still in the prototype phase but am really excited about where things are heading and think I’ll be listing a small collection of these hand marbled goods next week in the shop to see how the response is. I’ll let you know more about when they will be listed in a few days!

LOST WAX CASTING

sc.castrings.01sc.castrings.02sc.castrings.03sc.castrings.04

I recently took a course on lost wax casting – the jewelry technique of carving wax which then gets made into a mould and then cast into metal. I had never done any jewelry or sculpture classes before so I kept it REALLY simple and made three stacking rings – two cast in silver and one in brass. And while I can not say that I have found a new artistic passion in wax casting there was enough for me to love in the process to get me thinking about future projects – maybe even for S&C. Maybe.

If you’re in the Toronto area I took my class at The Devil’s Workshop on Queen W.

(When I finished carving the ring in the last photo I couldn’t shake the image of cat ears.)

PS. Both our online shops will be closed for the next 10 days as we get our F/W 12 season ready to launch. The shops will be open and stocked with new items in the week of September 17th.

BEHIND THE SCENES : THE RORSCHACH

One of my favourite pieces in the new line is The Rorschach silk scarf. I thought I’d give a little behind the scenes peek at the process behind it’s creation:

I wanted to create an illustration that felt textural like tie dye but if you looked closer you’d find some quirky surprises. I started by painting some inkblots on watercolour paper and scanned in a few of my favourites to work on in photoshop. I also spent some time hand painting leopard prints and other textures but none of them made the final cut (I so wish the unicorns had worked out).

In the computer I began layering different elements with the Rorschach inkblots until I felt that the composition worked. It was really important to me that the images I selected were a mix of pretty, cute and grotesque (Butterflies, check! Kitties, check! Skeleton hands, check!) so that the illustration didn’t seem too predictable. It was super fun brainstorming all the random bits and pieces that went into the graphic.

From there the file was sent to the printer to be screened on super thick, soft silk. I also got a smaller version of the print produced on thick cotton to eventually make pouches out of (they are still in process but will hopefully be a part of the collection soon). When the final scarves arrived on my door I decided to hand dye each one a silvery grey just to add a final aspect of texture.

I’m really excited about this new program and am hoping to add to the graphics available over the coming months!

One of the reasons we went down to Mexico was to visit with a small leather workshop that will hopefully be helping with some S&C items for the Fall/Winter 2012 collection. They took us to a local leather warehouse where I drooled over two massive rooms stuffed the brim of options. I could have stayed there for hours but managed to leave after only just one once V promised we’d visit again later in the year.

A few things around here:

Cutting sequins creates a beautiful mess.

A hat was found. This one came from a flea market which many of you recommended as the best and most affordable way secure one. Thanks to everyone that weighed in – all the tips were super helpful…

Possible outfits for the upcoming Spring 12 shoot. We’ll now be doing it in Toronto before we leave for Mexico so the race is on to pull it all together.

A studio booked. (image from studio website)

DYE TESTING, AGAIN

confettie.test.01
confettie.test.02

The past few weeks we’ve had a pretty major bathroom reno happening in our apartment. I missed the most of it (no toilet, no sink and giant hole in floor) when I went home for Christmas but it’s still been a long slog of not having a fully operational bathroom. It also meant I had to hold off on Spring 2012 colour tests while 2 or 3 contractors did 8 hour shifts in my ‘dyeing room’. I really need to get an external studio! Happily, we are in the home stretch with only the shower door missing which means my dye tests are back on…
