Mexico is a land of markets – antique, craft, knock-off – every type of market you can imagine. What is rare here is second hand. In an economy so poor the idea of getting rid of goods and clothing before they have been truly used just doesn’t make sense. There are the odd personal street sales but nothing like the giant Value Villages that set up shop in every neighborhood back home or the ‘we’re so trendy’ boutiques that sell tees with perfectly worn holes and washed down denim. While I am very, very excited to begin thrifting again once we return to Canada, thinking of the warehouses filled with unwanted goods waiting for me puts the economic lack down here in sharper focus.
